eyeonnature Massey Dec. 19 Bird Count A Flying Success 0 Jan 18 2010, 12:35 PM EST by eyeonnature

What do they say about the early birds? Well, in the case of the Annual Bird Count, volunteers were up and out at a bright and early 8:30 AM to catch sight of all the birds in an approximately 24 kilometer radius of the Massey area. Organizer Erwin Meissner (co-organized with Heather Barber) reported a fantastic turn out of 22 field observers and 21 feeder watchers at 19 locations this year.
The weather was cool, between -4 and -8 Celcius, sunny and with not much wind, they had many fine feathered friends taking flight.
The team spotted 30 different species, sighting 1,573 individual birds including a few rare for the season like one American Robin and a Purple Finch. Chickadees were in high spirits and high numbers totaling 345 for the day. Other notable birds included 33 Hairy Woodpeckers, 71 American Crows, 91 Snow Buntings, 16 Goldeneye Ducks, 1 Northern Shrike, 1 Pileated Woodpecker, 10 Pine Grosbeaks and 155 Evening Grosbeaks.
Meissner noted that there were fewer Dark Eyed Junco's this year, only two and the Pine Siskin's and Redpolls were in low numbers because of a poor growing season with low numbers of pine cones on the trees that the birds rely on for food.
The Annual Bird Count has been ongoing since the 1900's and is responsible for tracking the changing movements and populations of birds across North America, Latin America and the Caribbean. The event has been ongoing for 109 years in Ontario and this is was the eighth year that Massey has participated.
