President's Message
Please join us at our annual general meeting on May 13 to hear our 2 speakers. This is our annual meeting and we will be electing new members to the Board of Directors. Your support is appreciated.
As I end my second year as President of the Penokean Hills Field Naturalists, I would like to personally thank everyone for their support. It is by all of us working together that we are accomplishing things through the PHFN. This year has been a busy and successful year for the PHFN from a very successful calendar, to our many outings, feeding the birds at Sherriff Creek, wonderful speakers, and columns in the Standard, to name just a few.
This will be the last Wolf Howl until September but just because we won’t be producing a Wolf Howl nor will there be any meetings over the summer we won’t be idle. We will still have outings throughout the summer concluding with our Pot Luck Picnic on August 22. Our Saturday morning strolls through Sherriff Creek will also continue and our Tuesday evening walks will begin on Tuesday, May 20 at 7:00 p.m.
To keep up to date on activities and important events throughout the Spring and Summer, please continue to check out our website http://phfn.wetpaint.com/. Please note that this is a new website address and is a work in progress. Visit it often and your comments and suggestions are very welcome.
I would also like to welcome our new members Rene Gagnon and Joan Myers. Thank you for joining us.
We had a very successful Earth Day yesterday with many of our members assisting with picking up litter and dog leavings. Thank you to everyone who came out and helped.
The Ontario Hummingbird Project 2008
The Penokean Hills Field Naturalists, as a club, has decided to take on assisting with this province-wide project this year.
Its goals:
- Identifying migration routes and peak migration dates.
- Documenting spring arrival and fall departure dates.
- Defining the northern limits of the breeding range.
- Locating concentration points.
- Studying the nesting cycle.
- Documenting rare species visiting Ontario
- Collecting information on nesting locations, popular estimates, reproduction rates, and birds returning to the same locality each year.
To see more, look up: http://www.ontariohummingbirds.ca
Please send your information to our local coordinator, Brenda Clark. At no cost to you, send your name and email address to clarkib@sympatico.ca, and we’ll send you a list of the specific information we are collecting. For now, if you are interested, please get your feeder(s) up, and mark down the date of your first arrival, how many arrived and whether male and female ruby-throated hummingbirds (males have dark/red throats, females don’t). When that happens, send the info to Brenda right away.
Thanks for getting involved! And please remember to bring in your feeder at night.
Owls Route
Thank you to Jim Trottier, Northshore Area MNR Biologist, for doing Terry Carr’s owl route (north of Elliot Lake) in early April. He heard 6 Barred owls at 5 of the stops. On Jim’s own route he had 6 Barred and 1 Great Horned owl at 3 stops. A very successful monitoring.
